清和源氏満仲流.坂上田村麻呂の末裔である本馬八郎義俊が源満仲の養子となったことが始まりという.本馬八郎義俊は美濃国馬渡庄を所領としていた.白河上皇の代に延暦寺僧侶鎮圧の際に罪を得て肥前に流されたという.本馬義俊は松浦党に迎え入れられ,その子孫が馬渡[もうたい]を称するようになっていく.
